What is a Hackathon?

(From Wikipedia): A Hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest) is an event that usually lasts for one or two days, in which people with different backgrounds, as (but not restricted to) computer programmers and others involved in software development (graphic designers, interface designers and project managers) collaborate intensively on software projects.

What is Hack The Ride?

A 24-hour Hackathon that brings together creative and inquisitive minds to develop new mobile apps that will improve the motorcycle urban riding experience. Developers, designers and motorcycle users, all will be together at the same place for fun and an intense session of co-creation, hacking and collaboration.

When and where will the Hack the Ride take place?

From 22nd to 23rd of February 2014, 24 hours, from 12pm to 12pm. Barcelona. Mobile World Centre.

Who organizes Hack The Ride?

The Hack The Ride Hackathon is powered by BMW Motorrad and organized by La Mandarina de Newton.

Registration and Participation

Is participation free?

Yes! You need to register, but registration and participation is free! In addition to the online registration, participants will have to register in person at the start of the event with a valid personal ID.

How do I join?

By registering here as individual or as a team (3 members max.). In addition to the online registration, participants will have to register in person at the start of the event with a valid personal ID.

Is there a deadline for registration?

Yes! The deadline for registration is the 17th of February, 2014, at 5 p.m. (UTC/GMT +1, Barcelona Time)

Who may enter?

Anyone who is interested in the intersection of motorcycle riding, cities, coding, and design and enters the Hackathon to develop new apps for motorcycle (on its own or joining a team). See the Terms and Conditions document for more detailed information.

What are additional requirements to be admitted to participate?

During the registration process you will be asked to submit a short description of your app development and motorcycling experience. Your registration will be confirmed within 2 days.

What equipment do I need at the Hackathon?

You should bring your own computer, and any other material that you might need to develop your app prototype.

Will there be free food & drinks?

Yes, of course.

Will there be free WIFI?


I can’t stay whole 24 hours, can I still participate?

To be eligible for the award, you must develop the app at and during the event, and you must be present to pitch your app to the jury.

Do I have to prepare or develop anything before the event?

Not required. Feel free to think about the project you would like to work on. Form a team (3 members max.) before the event, if you want to. Hacking and coding must take place at the event. Follow the latest information on the Hack The Ride website and newsletter (link).

May I register as a team?

Yes, you may register as team with 2 or 3 members.

When do I have to register?

In order to participate, individuals and teams have to register online at the Hack The Ride Microsite before February 17th 2014, 5 p.m. (UTC/GMT +1, Barcelona time)

Can I build or join a team at the event?

Yes. You can build a team during the speed dating session on the start of the Hackathon.

How do I find people to team up with?

We have created a Meetup Group in order to connect with other developers, and to share and discuss ideas. You can also ask us for help and we will try to find and suggest a team for you.


Will there be awards?

Yes, there are several prizes for winners and winning teams. See Terms and Conditions for details.

How can I win an award?

Develop an app prototype during the event and present your app at the end of the event to be judged by a jury. See Terms and Conditions for details.

What app should be developed?

The app improves primarily the urban motorcycle or scooter experience.

The app should be developed as native mobile app that the driver or co-pilot uses before, during and/or after riding her/his motorcycle or scooter of any size or type (e.g. combustion engine or electric drive etc.). The app improves the motorcycle or scooter experience, explicitly using or owning a motorcycle (useless without using a motorcycle or scooter).
